The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
